I had graduated from the university program a year ago and was working at the local Wal-Mart in order to pay my student loans. My work there barely covered the loan payments, and I was forced to move back in with my parents. Feeling depressed, I sat down and reevaluated my life. I had already applied for all the available teaching jobs in the immediate area, and couldn’t afford to look at the options in other states. I could go back to school and take some classes, which would make me, qualified for other types of work, but that meant I would be creating even more debt for myself. That was when I started thinking about picking up a TEFL course.
The idea of having to travel all over the world looking for work had never, ever appealed to me. I’ve always been a homebody and like to be surrounded by people and things that I know. Still, I needed money and I hated working at Wal-Mart, so I registered for a TEFL course and began the journey to life as a TEFL teacher.
Several of the available job openings I found were very short term, and at first I felt very lucky to find a short-term position teaching in Rio de Janiero. I loved the city, I liked the kids I worked with, and I was even able to earn a little extra money tutoring my landlord’s teenage daughter in physics. After six months, the job expired. With a heavy heart I packed up my bags and headed home.
When I looked at the additional openings to teach online TEFL course, I started looking for another position in Rio de Janiero, but it was actually a job in South Korea that caught my eye. The biggest difference between it and every other posted job was that it came with a two-year contract. I couldn’t turn in my application fast enough.
That was five years ago and I feel so blessed to still be in South Korea and working in the same school. Not only have I managed to make a home in the country, but I fell in love with one of my fellow teachers and got married. I’m looking forward to starting a family with him and watching them grow in this truly amazing culture.
I can’t imagine how different my life would be if I hadn’t decided to take a chance on the TEFL course. If you are looking for a career where you can make a difference in the lives of others and have a fun, rewarding lifestyle, consider teaching TEFL.
